EV Revolution Brings Car Competitors Together

It goes without saying that the shift from manufacturing traditional fossil fuelled vehicles to electric is transformational for any organisation. This significant change is bringing traditional rivals together in an effort to collaborate on the technology needed to meet the demands of the global EV market. Partnerships allow for greater purchasing economies of scale and cost savings across the board including development and production planning.

At the luxury end, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW have announced plan to work together to develop next generation electric motors. The project will centre around BMW's fifth generation eDrive technology and will include engineering, R&D and procurement.

According to Nick Rogers of Jaguar Land Rover, "The pace of change and consumer interest in electrified vehicles is gathering real momentum and it's essential we work across industry to advance the technologies required to deliver this exciting future."

For the wider EV audience, Toyota and Subaru are joining forces, specifically for midsize and large passenger vehicles with the intention of jointly developing a BEV SUV model for each company's own brand.

Subaru brings to the table its all-wheel-drive technologies developed over many years, while Toyota's expertise in vehicle electrification technologies will create a strong foundation for the venture.

According to Toyota 'the platform will be developed in a way that will make it broadly applicable to multiple vehicle types, including C-segment-class and D-segment-class sedans and SUVs, as well as to efficient development of derivative vehicle models.'
